about Southwest Harbor. Southwest Harbor is the largest town on the West side
of Mount Desert Island which locally is referred to as the "quiet side".
A stroll along Southwest Harbor's quaint upscale Main
Street provides
wonderful shopping, restaurants and activities. Southwest Harbor
is where most of the historic bed and breakfasts inns are located along
with the hotels, motels, and vacation rentals cottages making them convenient to
dining,
shopping and
activities on
Mount Desert Island. You
will not be short on also finding splendid
vacation rentals in and
around the Southwest Harbor area for your Maine vacation. In the Southwest
Harbor area you will find a spectacular part of
Acadia National Park at
Seawall which you will certainly not want to miss visiting when you
visit Acadia National Park on the Bar Harbor side. It's just a
short ride from Bar Harbor. Southwest Harbor and the villages on
this side of Mount Desert Island are free from the hustle and bustle yet
are not short on character and many activities for your vacation
enjoyment. You can enjoy Southwest's harbor from many vantage
points, one from the public dock off of
Clark's
Point which is used for both commercial and leasurely boating.
At the Great Harbor Marina you'll get fantastic views of the harbor and
islands beyond. Just beyond Southwest Harbor to the left is Manset which
is home of Hinckley Yachts one of the finest crafted
boats in the World. Next, you'll find
Bass Harbor Head Light which was built in 1858 on a
magnificent rugged shoreline. At Bass Harbor Head light you can enter on
the right where you can go right up to the light house which is occupied
all year long; however, there is a path on the left from the
parking lot that will take you to the best vantage point.
There are steps that lead
you down to the huge granite rocks that jet out where you can take
awesome photos of the lighthouse. You'll also want to stop at
Seal Cove and if you're lucky you'll see seals sunning and playing. There
are also picnic tables that are placed to provide the best views of the
Seal Cove. You will
also find the Seal Cove Auto Museum which is of the most amazing brass
antique auto collections in the world, dating as far back as the 1800's.
Southwest Harbor is a beautiful part of Mount Desert Island that you
shouldn't miss.
Southwest Harbor Maine was one of the
locations where the Storm of the Century was filmed. This was a TV
series which was made into a movie. It was based on the novel by
Stephen King,
who lives in Bangor Maine. Southwest Harbor is also home of
the Hinckley
Yacht company since 1928. While Southwest Harbor
is just minutes from Acadia National Park Seawall, it also boats several
beaches and attractions. One wonderful attraction owned by the
town of Southwest Harbor is the Charlotte Rhoades butterfly park.
