Things to do on a rainy day in and near Acadia National Park:

Don't let the rain stop you from enjoying Acadia -- use it to your advantage to explore indoors.  A rainy day is a great time to for inside activities in the Acadia National Park areas of Bar Harbor, the Blue Hill Peninsula, and the Schoodic Peninsula.  On those rainy days, put on your rain coats, grab your umbrellas and head out for the day.  Our list of things to do on a rainy day are sure to brighten even the grayest day.   If you start your day early, you can do it all!
 
Shop 2 entire floors at the Grasshopper Shop in Ellsworth (on Main Street) where you'll find stylish clothes, jewelry, handbags, gifts, housewares, kitchen gadgets, unique books and an entire floor dedicated to toys and games.  A can't miss shop for kids of all ages.
 
Visit Shirleys Yarns, Crafts and Gifts in Hancock (just a few minutes from downtown Ellsworth on Route 1) and find all kinds of things in each of the many departments offering something for everyone.  While kids (and adults) enjoy the arts and crafts department,  grown ups might enjoy picking up supplies for that knitting or crochet project that they've always wanted to start.   
 
Visit Mainely Maine and hear the talking lobster fisherman tell tales while shopping this store filled with all kinds of souvenirs, nautical items, toys, jewelry, gifts and clothing.  All at great prices.  While shopping Mainely Maine, why not slip on a pair of minnetonka moccasins.  These are the most comfortable slippers ever
 
The art of making bells using ancient techniques can be seen when you visit world renowned U.S. Bells and Foundry  You'll also enjoy the music of the bells inside the adorable gift shop where you can bring home an authentic piece of Maine.

Did you ever wonder how pottery is made?  The clay comes right off the land and goes through several processes before it is turned into stunning pottery.   You can see how the pottery has been made since 1969 at  Rackliffe Pottery in Blue Hill (just 20 minutes from Ellsworth on the Surry road)  Kids love see the workshop and touch the clay.
 
Just down the road from Rackliffe pottery, you'll find  MERI, the Maine Environmental Research Institute in downtown Blue Hill.  A fun place for kids to visit to learn about sea animals and ocean life.  Kids can enjoy story book hour, the ocean room's see and touch sea life sessions.  There are also lectures and eco cruises.  If you are into antique cars you can find an amazing collection of them in mint condition at the Seal Cove Auto Museum dating as far back as the early 1800's.   Southwest Harbor is Just on the other side of Mount Desert Island, on the Southwest Side (opposite Bar Harbor)

 
If you like like watching live theatre productions, you will enjoy the Repertory Theatre in Somesville which is just minutes  from Bar Harbor and the downtown Southwest Harbor area.  Don't miss it.  There is an impressive schedule of comedy, drama and mystery that is sure to please.
