Welcome to the Northeast Harbor and Seal
Harbor area.
This stretch of coast along the foothills of Acadia
National Park is known as being quite exclusive with
statured citizens such as the Fords and Rockefellers. Northeast Harbor
is also very well known as a major yachting center with a large
Marina near the eastern side entrance of the Somes Sound, the
only fjord on the Eastern Seaboard. A drive along Sargeant
Drive reveals the long stretch of the Sound's natural beauty and
boating activities on one side and views of the golf course on
the other. Seal Harbor provides a popular public
beach with views of boats in the harbor and there is also
a yacht club with a small fleet of boats nearby.
Both areas are also unforgettable with
exclusive gardens that are beautiful any time of the year.
Three public garden strolls include the Asticou Gardens which is
just off of Main Street, the Thuya Gardens which is nearby
off of Peabody and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Gardens off of
Green Rock. The Rockefeller garden is open to the public
certain times of the year and by appointment. Further
details, directions and reservation information can be found at
www.rockgardenmaine.wordpress.com.
While a drive through the area and strolls
through the gardens are quite nice, there are also several
wonderful trails to enjoy here that are very scenic, and for
those that enjoy boating, just off the harbors, there is
Islesford Island, the Cranberry Isles and the Acadia National
Park owned Baker Island.
