Welcome to Beals Island Maine!
Although this is a quiet island in the Atlantic Ocean it
is no sleeper when it comes to beauty. Located just over the
bridge from Jonesport, a world of Downeast Maine's working waterfront is
in sight, peppered by beaches, parks and hiking trails. It also has
schools, libraries and churches. The Downeast Institute
offers a beautiful scenic spot on the island. It is a non profit
organization that creates hatcheries in an effort to rebuilt shellfish
stocks. They also do marine research and provide marine resource
education. The waterfront here is lined with strategically placed rocks
which provides a protective wall (not meant for walking on). Then
there's the Great Wass Islad Conservacy which is 1,540 acres and is realtively
untouched. If you like hiking trails through the woods, you've found a
great spot here. There is plenty of parking and 4 trails to choose
from ranging between 1.5 and 5 miles. We kept walking straight
taking the Little Cape Cove Trail. It is relatively easy to walk
with a few mildly demanding uphill areas. The trails are pretty
well indicated with paint markers on trees. On our tour of Cape
Point Vista, we walked the trail for about 30 minutes stopping at
this open ledge area then turned around due to time constraints.
Continuing on would lead you to the shore at Cape Cove where you can
walk along the shore at Read Head. There are usually
brochures in the welcome box with a map. If you enjoy this kind of
outdoor activity, these trails are worth visiting and require at least 2
hours of time.
